A major milestone — Voyager 1 just crossed the 25 billion km mark from Earth
At this staggering distance, signals from Earth take more than 23 hours to reach the probe, with an equal delay for responses.
As it continues its journey through interstellar space, its next major milestone will be reaching one light day (25.9 billion km) from the Sun, expected in January 2027 — coinciding with the 50th anniversary of its launch.
However, dwindling power levels may require engineers to shut down some scientific instruments to keep the mission going.
But despite its immense speed and distance from Earth, Voyager 1 is still remarkably close to home. To put things into perspective, Proxima Centauri, the nearest star beyond our solar system, is 4.24 light-years away — a journey that would take Voyager 1 close to 100,000 years to complete.
